Gold Award Summary and Results
Here is the recording of the animal science panel I hosted!
The panel had 34 attendees in total. I was able to ask 7 questions during the one hour period, and each panelist answered all of them. In the survey, I had the girls rate their interest and knowledge in animal science careers before and after the event.
Here are the survey results:
Before attending the panel, only 27% of the attendees rated their interest as a 4 or 5. After attending, this percentage rose up to 58%.
As you can see, many of the students gained more knowledge and interest in the careers presented after attending the event.
The questions I asked:
Thank you to the 7 panelists!
The questions I asked:
- What is your favorite part about your job/career?
- What is a typical day like in your field?
- The topic of animal captivity and keeping zoos open is a very controversial one. What is your stance on it and why? In what ways do zoos benefit the animals and the community?
- What are some of the pros and cons while working with the animals? Which animal is the most unpleasant to work with?
- For students who are interested in working with animals, what are some of the skills that you recommend that we should be developing? For example, I can imagine certain skill sets would be needed when it comes to stressful parts of the job.
- What is the most surprising thing about your job, something that you didn't know before you started?
- Do you have any other advice you would like to share with our high schoolers?
